Dan Houser Speaks at Length about the Game
Section : GTA IV | Source : GTAGaming & Variety | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 18:00 BST

Dan Houser is Creative Vice President at Rockstar Games, and he's given a rare, lengthy interview to Variety about all things GTA. In it, he provides his opinion that the original GTA team in Dundee, Scotland simply "fell apart" following arguments over whether the game could be made in 3D and he makes it clear that ultimately, the decision on where to set the next game lies firmly with the development team.

"New York came out as the obvious place because we'd never done it before. In the old games [Liberty City] was just vaguely East Coast-ish. It wasn't New York and it wasn't trying to be. And then we realized, why would anyone making a TV show in New York know it better than us now that we lived here 10 years?"

Features Dropped from the Game Including Music While-You-Walk
Section : GTA IV | Source : GTAGaming | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 16:30 BST

Some time ago, a number of magazines reported that you'd be able to listen to music while you walk around the streets of Liberty City using GTA IV's cell phone. Unfortunately, EGM has now confirmed that this feature has been axed from the final version of the game, along with a rumour of Split-Screen Multiplayer for both versions of the game, this feature has also been dropped.

The removal of promised features is not uncommon for GTA titles. Early in the San Andreas media blitz, an excited Dan Houser told the Official UK PlayStation 2 Magazine "We're having to go to dual layer DVD because we've already filled up a full DVD". Later that year, GTA San Andreas shipped on a single layer DVD for PS2. Other magazines, including Australia's official PS2 magazine and GamePro, reported that trams in San Fierro would be drivable, yet this feature was mysteriously missing from the final release.

Then during GTA III's PC development GameSpy was going to team up with Rockstar Games to help with the multiplayer modes, but upon the game's release there was no multiplayer modes as the ideas were scrapped, but evidence of the GameSpy logo can still be seen hidden in GTA III's txd/img files as well as the unused multiplayer menus.

With just eight days left until GTA IV's release, could this be the beginning of a week which reveals some more features which didn't make the cut for the final version of GTA IV?

Australia Also Gets A PS3 Bundle
Section : GTA IV | Source : Kotaku, GameArena & ScreenPlay | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 13:05 BST

While still officially unannounced by either Sony or Take-Two, the Grand Theft Auto IV/PS3 hardware bundle that's destined for European shores will also be available in Australia. The news comes courtesy of major nationwide retailer Harvey Norman, who have the bundle priced at AUD$748. Not a bad deal considering a 40GB PS3 and GTAIV purchased separately would set you back AUD$820.

The Kojima Productions Report - Session 087?
Section : MGS4 & MGO | Source : Kojima Productions | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 12:30 BST

I've has a few emails of recently asking what's happened to the Kojima Productions Report and since it's been over two weeks since Session 086 was released, I thought I'd take five minutes to address this issue. So here are my thoughts as to why The Kojima Productions Report has been absent as of late.

  • Finishing touches being added to MGS4 as it is releaased in 52 days.
  • Finishing touches being added to MGS4 as it is reviewed in about 26 days.
  • Ryan Payton is busy with MGS4 and MGO so he doesn't have time for the Report.
  • The Kojima Productions team have also got to get new projects ready for E3 2008.
  • If Ryan Payton did the Report then MGS4 would more than likely have to delayed again.

You can more than likely expect Session 087 of the Kojima Productions to return sometime in the middle of May 2008 when the reviews start to get released for MGS4, so stay tuned.

PSM3 French Review
Section : GTA IV | Source : PlanetGTA & GTALegende | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 12:00 BST

French gaming magazine PSM3 has scored Grand Theft Auto IV with a 20/20, calling it " The immensity of the city is almost frightening."

This is the new information from the review:

  • The immensity of the city is almost frightening
  • The graphics are very cared for whatever subject or detail. Everything shines, everything is beautiful!
  • Walking in San Andreas with no aim in the streets was sometimes boring. The beauty of Liberty City and its animation make walking a real pleasure
  • It's Roman that motivate Niko to start missions by always reminding him the big plans of the family Bellic.
  • You can make work joy girls.
  • Weapons stores will be in Liberty City
  • You'll be able to take the subway to travel LC
  • During the missions, Niko could put to good use his abilities to climb and infiltrate quietly.
  • In a mission, Niko and his friends had to steal the trunk of a bank using explosives. This was followed by a race with the SWAT, helicopters, and Niko had to take refuge in the Underground subway to gain $250000.
  • In the clothing stores, you choose your clothes and you try them directly.
  • The Pay N Spray is not being used to evade the cops, just to paint your car.
  • The only bugs noticed by the journalists are the problem of sight, and the heavy motions of the character.
  • The use of L2 & R2 (LT/RT for the 360) for braking and accelerating is confirmed.
  • The game supposedly "looks great at 1080p".
  • Packie is Irish.
  • *Possible Spoiler*: One mission involves robbing a bank. Police and SWAT teams are after you after the heist and you must escape through the underground metro system.
  • When you purchase clothes, you click on the item and you try it out straight away; there are none of the unbearable loading times from San Andreas.
  • Pay 'n' Spray's are confirmed but only to change your car paint. They won't affect your star rating.
  • There are some problems with the aiming system - Niko sometimes feels 'heavy' while moving and the A.I. can be dumb at times, but this is barely noticeable and fairly excusable considering the scale and the complexity of the environment around you.
  • Best game ever made.

Here are the four reviews so far for the game:

  • Official PlayStation Magazine (UK) : 10/10
  • Official Xbox Magazine (UK) : 10/10
  • Games Aktuell Magazine (German): 10/10
  • PSM3 (French) : 20/20

15 New Screenshots and a Video of Premiere Beta Now Available
Section : MGO | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 11:50 BST

Now I have managed to complete the update for the MGO Beta I can bring you all fifteen new screenshots and a new video, but first if you remember that earlier in the week I told you all that the MGO Beta file that you download from the PSN Store was 741mb, well that's not the worst part as after you've downloaded the beta and installed the update file onto the beta file the size increases from 741mb to 1582mb, this makes the v1.1 update file a huge 841mb, so the update is larger than the download file.

Also the MGO Beta file is a free download and it's 1.50gb, that's nearly as big as Gran Turismo 5, which is 1.8gb and that costs £25.00, so this is well worth it.

Anyway, this video is available for direct download via this site and the size of the video is a massive 117mb, but if you don't want to download it then you can also watch it over at my YouTube Channel.

Worldwide Pre-Orders have Already Started
Section : Resistance 2 | Source : GameStop USA & Play UK | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 17:30 BST

Even though it's still at least seven months until Resistance 2 is released It seems that the teaser trailer has really kicked the game into full swing as pre-orders for the game have already started to materialise, GameStop USA has the game listed for the 4th November 2008 with a price label of $59.99.

While on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean back here in the UK, Play.com have also listed the game up for pre-order, but their release date plants Resistance 2 on the 28th November 2008, with a reduced price of only £34.99, which is £15.00 cheaper than the UK shops and £5.00 cheaoer than standard internet prices, so get your pre-orders in now to be assured a copy of the game at a cheaper price.

Games Aktuell Review
Section : GTA IV | Source : GTA4.net | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 15:40 BST

German magazine Games Aktuell is the latest magazine to review Grand Theft Auto IV. Here is their verdict:

  • Graphics: 9/10
The gigantic size of the city makes you forget the few graphical imperfections of the game.
  • Sound: 10/10
Best GTA soundtrack ever, and probably the most compelling feature in the game.
  • Controls: 8/10
Far from perfect but a big step from the previous GTA games.
  • Multiplayer: 9/10
Great concept and innovative integration with the single-player mode.
  • Gameplay: 10/10
    We can't score it 11/10...
  • Conclusion:
GTA4 is by far the best action game ever created.

UPDATE : This review is based on earlier preview sessions at R*. It's not based on the final retail version of the game. It still contains the review screenshots however (the same ones featured in OXM/OPM).

Konami will Replace Broken Beta Codes
Section : MGS4 | Source : PS3fanboy & PlayStation Blog | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 12:05 BST

Brandon Laurino of Konami Online has written another post on the PlayStation.Blog to address a number of questions people have had about the Metal Gear Online beta. The most pressing query being about a number of Metal Gear Online beta keys missing digits and, therefore, being unusable. People who are affected by this are advised to contact Konami Support, making sure to include your broken code and a return email address.

Laurino continues to answer more questions from users. While he does so we find out that Konami representatives will be participating in the beta themselves and that we should "stay tuned" for more info. This is also the case if you are after more details on the "gunmetal PS3" bundle which was announced last week. Funnily enough, though, no mention has been made of the fact that it is currently impossible to get a Konami ID from the website. The beta starts on Monday, so we're hoping that will be fixed before then. Otherwise Konami could have a lot of angry PS3 owners on their hands.

Lazlow Talks about the Game
Section : GTA IV | Source : PlanetGTA | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 11:55 BST

Vanilla Shake sent in the following information he gathered from what Lazlow said on the Opie & Anthony Show this morning:

  • Jim Norton plays a worker in a porn shop. "That's a vintage bush" is a line he says.
  • Here's a random line: "Eat my fat hairy fist!"
  • There are over 100 radio commercials.
  • Sometimes there are announcements in the subway about police harassing you and searching you randomly.
  • There are Piswasser commercials mocking the Budweiser radio commercials played in America. Lazlow played one of them and it's sung by Anthony himself.
  • You can go on different news websites in the game and read about different crimes you've committed.
  • You can date girls you've met on dating websites.
  • When you get shot in individual places, there will be different reactions e.g. if Niko gets shot in the leg, he will begin to bleed from there and he will also begin to limp.
  • Recording sessions went on for weeks, ten hours a day, every day.
  • There were a lot of weekends that were spent by Rockstar employees trying to make the game as great as possible.
  • Lazlow says he prefers the Xbox version because of downloadable content: new missions, characters, comedy, etc.
  • O&A admit that it's amazing and as Anthony puts it "everybody will have a blast playing."

Audio Q&A at GamesRadar
Section : GTA IV | Source : GTA4.net | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 11:50 BST

The movies that we watch, the games that we play... they just wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for the audio. The Grand Theft Auto series is no exception; the ambiance of the city is as important to Grand Theft Auto as the Imperial March is to Star Wars. GTA IV aims to maintain this healthy balance of audio and visual, and on that note, I'm happy to say that GamesRadar has just recently posted a multi-page Audio Q&A for Grand Theft Auto IV.

The Q&A includes Matthew Smith, Craig Conner and Will Morton, all of whom are senior employees with the Rockstar North audio team. Some quotes that we found particularly interesting:

  • "Stand in the street and you'll hear three different radio stations at any one time coming from passing vehicles, all sounding appropriately tinny or boomy, depending on the type of vehicle and whether its doors are open, its windows broken, etc."
  • "It was our aim that you could place the player in a random position on the map, shut your eyes and listen, and be able to tell where you are, and what time of day it is, and I think we've achieved that pretty well."
  • "For multiplayer, we balance [the sound of gunfire] so that guns only really sound dangerously beefy when they're at a distance you can be hit from, so it's intuitive what's threatening and what's someone else's private war."
  • "It's difficult to quantify how many speaking parts there are, but at our last count there were over 740 unique voices in the game. There are over 80,000 individual lines of dialogue, more than 7000 of which are Niko's lines. If you were to listen to each line back to back, it would take over 29 hours. Also, these figures don't take the radio, TV, and mo-capped cut-scene dialogue into consideration."
  • "We also decided to make the pedestrian dialogue more realistic in GTA4. As an example, peds in previous games would walk around and randomly chat to themselves if they weren't doing much else. In real life, people (generally!) don't go around talking to themselves, so we dropped this behavior from GTA4. However, we realized that the random chat of old GTA games was a good way for the player to pick-up on what sort of personality a ped has, so we created the cell-phone conversations in GTA4 as one realistic way of portraying personality."

You'll have to wait until the game's release date to get a proper look at the site's features, which we're promised will be a complete statistics tracking application along with prizes for those who rush through GTA the fastest.

Just to sweeten the deal though, Rockstar Games announced the Grand Theft Auto IV Custom Portrait Sweepstakes. Everyone who registers before April 29th will be automatically entered into the contest, where the grand prize is a portrait of yourself created in the GTA IV art style.

More Rumors: Including 5-Minute Install Times, Xbox 360 DLC Features
Section : GTA IV | Source : PS3updates & VideoGaming247 | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 22:00 BST

With only a couple of weeks to go before Rockstar Games' flagship title Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PS3) goes out, a couple of rumors regarding the title's release has once again popped up. Neogaf forum poster Skip (a.k.a. Andrew Pfister, writer of 1UP's GTA 4 preview) revealed that the upcoming game will have a five-minute mandatory install time for the PlayStation 3 version.

It was further revealed that the installation for the Xbox 360 version of GTA 4 is a completely optional feature.
Unfortunately, there's been no confirmation from Rockstar whether this will make it in the final version of the
game when it ships to retail stores.

In addition, word from CVG's GTA 4 special feature has it that the Xbox 360-exclusive downloadable content for the game won't just contain the odd car or additional skins. The DLC will supposedly contain an area as
significant as Vice City or San Andreas. Should this rumor be true, it'll definitely extend playability for the Xbox 360 version by leaps and bounds.

We only have less than two weeks to go before the release of Grand Theft Auto 4, so we might as well wait and see how Rockstar decides to play out its cards until then. In any case, make sure to come back to this spot for more updates regarding this much anticipated title.

Lengthy Patch Download Available Including New Screenshots
Section : MGO | Source : PS3updates & PS3fanboy | Posted by Matt Stanyon at 11:30 BST

The download is 741MB, so that shouldn't take a whole lot of waiting to get. Sadly, though, you won't be able to play it just yet. We all still have to wait for the 21st of April to sneak up on enemies and give them cans of butt-kick CQC-style.

After successfully downloading the Metal Gear Online beta, we recommend launching the game as soon as possible. Yes, online play won't go live until Monday, but there's a significant patch that you'll have to download before the beta's start. If you wait until Monday, you'll waste precious time that could be used fragging other beta participants.

There are two delivery options, one which involves peer-to-peer connections, a la BitTorrent. Unfortunately, the hours-long download cannot be background downloaded. PS3 is certainly encouraging a lot more sandwich eating, no?

Also as soon as the Metal Gear Online Beta hits the European PlayStation Store I'll be downloading it and bringing you all screenshots and videos in all their glory, then when the Beta is available to play on the 21st April 2008 I'll bring you all screenshots and videos of the game itself including all of the game modes, weapons, menus and maps, So stay tuned.
