On Friday 22nd June 2007 1up.com updated their site with the latest session of the podcast called 1up Yours and they talked about the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

The most interesting part of this was that they said that at E3 2006 they personally spoke with Rockstar Games and Rockstar confirmed that the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV WILL have downloadable content and they speculated that it might be totally different from the downloadable content for the Xbox 360 versin of Grand Theft Auto IV

Manhunt 2 - The game won't create murderers
Time : 13:15 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

But will still have side effects on kids

"This is a horror genre. People who like horror will love it." Rockstar spokesperson Rodney Walker may have been right when he said that. Especially with the recent controversy surrounding Manhunt 2 - it's been nothing but horror for them and Take-Two Interactive.

Despite the fact that the developers wanted an M rating for the game - so that it could still be sold to 17 year olds who are horror fans - Manhunt 2 fell from 1) an Adults Only rating in the US to 2) getting banned in Europe to 3) an utter halt in distribution.

We're sure a lot of you guys have your own opinions. And we're pretty damn sure that lots of other people are affected as well. We've heard from financial analysts, other developers, and even pro-family groups of what their take on it is. The Boston Globe has even compiled a couple of pros and cons from other people as well. For example, with 30 years of studying the effects of media violence on children, Joanne Cantor says:

The more realistic and involving the game gets, and the greater the similarity between the action in the game and real life action, the stronger the negative effects would be. No, your son may not turn into a criminal. But exposure will take a toll on his life somewhere, probably in interpersonal relationships. These are subtle effects. They take time to surface. A teen isn't going to notice them.

This statement seems to be nodded in agreement by the director the Boston-based Campaign for a Commercial - Free Childhood, Alvin Poussaint, who can't quite imagine teenagers playing Manhunt 2. His reason is that "The level of participation makes the game worse than any that preceded it. It might not make anyone a killer, but could it make someone prone to domestic violence or child abuse?"

Other people don't blame Manhunt 2 for creating murderers also. Family Research Lab co-driector  David Finkelhor even claims that juvenile crime rate has decreased in the 10-to-12 period that violent video games have been distributing in the market. His sentiment lies in the fact that a video game isn't the sole factor that would induce a kid into criminal activities:

It's when you have other potentiating factors -- family problems, mental health issues, extreme stress, dangerous neighborhoods. Playing these games with or without the Wii enhancement is not going to take the typical teenage boy and make a killer out of him.

A mouthful, yeah? Let these thoughts sink in for a moment. Has the Manhunt 2 issue now blown up to unfounded proportions? Will we ever find closure with this? There's definitely a lot of things going through our heads right now. And if you don't mind, we'd like to hear your reactions to this as well. Do note that commenting won't create murderers (but it can still have side effects of summoning a certain environmentalist hero).

Manhunt 2 - Analysts: The controversy could increase sales
Time : 13:10 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

Financial analysts are certainly having a field day with Manhunt 2, with its recent banning and all. They've tried to predict what Take-Two will do regarding their ultra-violent title, they've guessed as to why the publishing firm is getting all this bad rap - and now, they're saying that Manhunt 2's suspension could actually end up boosting the game's sales.

Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets is one of those analysts, saying that he doesn't believe the move to suspend Manhunt 2 will actually hurt the company's bottom line in the long run, but instead increase the game's exposure - thus boosting demand when it hits store shelves.

He also believes, as we've reported in an earlier article, that Take-Two will probably do what it has to do to lower the game's rating from the current Adults Only to a softer, more accessible Mature rating. And while it's a given that stores such as Wal-Mart will always be wary about customer backlash, the controversy itself is already free publicity - and savvy store-owners will take the risk of selling a Mature title that's already popular beyond belief.

Sebastian also notes that even if Manhunt 2 does tank, the struggling publisher still has an ace up its sleeve - namely, the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV - to fall back on. He puts it like so:

Relative to Grand Theft Auto it's [Manhunt 2] a lot less significant. Grand Theft Auto is the key driver. This is a second-tier title.

Well, for a second-tier title, it's certainly getting first-tier attention. And while it's very possible that controversy could actually boost sales, it could also work the opposite way if the game itself gets overhyped and for some reason it doesn't deliver what it's promised to do. One thing's for sure, though, is that it's violent as heck.

Further updates about Manhunt 2 as I get them.

GTA IV - 3 Trailers to be released in total.
Time : 18:15 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

New updated demo in existence + more.

Yesterday 1up.com updated their site with the latest session of the podcast called 1up Yours and it had a snippet from John Davison who recently went to visit Rockstar Games.

Interesting that after this up and coming trailer on the 28th June, only one more trailer is to be released, so it's probably due at the end of September, so that'll will continue the three month gap between trailers, as you may remember the first trailer was released on 29th March 2007 and now the second trailer will be released on the 28th June 2007, which is also a three month gap.

So I'll say for now that the third and final trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV will be released on Thursday 27th September 2007, even though this is just a guess.

Manhunt 2 - NIMF: The delay "a victory for parents and children"
Time : 16:15 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

The National Institute of Media and the Family (NIMF) has chimed in on the recent news that Take-Two Interactive has opted to suspend distribution of Manhunt 2. In their recent statement, the NIMF was more or less pleased by the occurrences, calling it "a victory for parents and children."

Regarding the ESRB's handling of the matter, the NIMF had only praises for them. Said their statement,

Because of the their thoughtful decision to give Manhunt 2 its strongest rating, 'Adults Only,' the ESRB has sent a strong message to Take-Two and other game makers that they no longer can push the envelope on gratuitous violence in videogames. The ESRB showed real leadership in assigning this rating and further evidence it is making significant progress in keeping extremely violent and graphic materials out of children's hands.

According to the IGN report, the NIMF has yet to play the game, basing its decision on the trailers viewable on the internet, as well on the fact that the game makes the player act out the violence prevalent in the game.

For more of the statements made by the NIMF, feel free to check out the link below for the full statement they gave.

Manhunt 2 - Running With Scissors 'shares the pain' on the controversy
Time : 10:55 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

As soon as news flared up about a violent game banned, we knew this was bound to happen. For those uninformed, Running With Scissors' Postal (expanded by Special Delivery) was probably the granddaddy of extreme violent game controversies, and its equally violent successor, Postal II (expanded by Share the Pain and Apocalypse Weekend), was similarly banned in multiple regions despite a still growing fanbase on the PS2 and PC.

Postal was also one of the first titles to be blamed for tragedies in real life. But while Postal was created from the ground up to focus more on the hilarity of the idea of violence and not extreme violence, the series was the first to pick up the "Intense Violence" rating from the ESRB.

And now as the gaming community centers around the huge controversy concerning Manhunt 2 and calls for their freedom to choose what they can and cannot play, someone caught up with Vince Desi, CEO of Running With Scissors, for an interview regarding Take-Two Interactive's Manhunt 2.

Concerned for the direction the game industry is taking, Desi knows that the real issue behind the developments unfolding at present is actually the game industry allowing itself "to be set up." He believes that despite being a free society (pardon for his potshot at the UK), the game industry allows itself to be played like a puppet by the government, politicians and the media that want to play out the win-lose story and who should play what.

RWS is currently celebrating the 10th anniversary of Postal and are already at work on Postal III (for the PC and Xbox 360), but Desi is anticipating another outcry by the government when the game nears completion. And that's even when Postal III still maintains an M for Mature rating. Desi explains:

The video game industry is too easy for [the government] to complain about, and with a presidential election next year I can only imagine the pseudo talking points we'll be hearing. It could be the only issue the Democrats and Republicans agree upon. How old were you when you lit your first cigarette? Drank your first beer? I think rating systems work in general as they provide consumers with so-called valuable information, [but] they should never be seen as or expected to be a policing policy.

And while Microsoft won't be lifting the AO-mandate for the Xbox 360, Desi believes that Postal III will pass with flying colors. As developers from the past decade, RWS is still keeping to the ancient way to make games: make them creative and fun.

"We never think in terms of violence, it reduces the game to a one-dimensional perspective, aka BORING. We design for laughs. It's so much more entertaining when you can play for fun and at the same time laugh your ass off," he concluded.

Manhunt 2 - Gamers launch petition to un-ban the game
Time : 10:45 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

In the aftermath of the UK ban on Manhunt 2 and the Adults Only rating slapped on to it by the ESRB, online whines and moans have echoed across forums questioning the move. One group decided to take it a notch higher with an online petition.

We found the aforementioned petition in petitionspot.com and it does carry a lot of sensible arguments on why the developers and the governments must find a way to appease the consumers. Here's the text:

We acknowledge our roles as consumers in the video game industry. Our dollars dictate policy but as a video game developer, you are forced to seek out our dollars in as many places as possible. So as Manhunt 2 was banned in the United Kingdom from obtaining a rating and the ESRB awarded the game an Adults Only rating instead of the much more appropriate Mature, we saw the chances of Manhunt 2 becoming economically viable dwindle. We know that you, as a video game developer, need as many open channels as possible to remain profitable in this heavily competitive field. Which is why, to fans of the Manhunt series and violent games in general, today was a heavy blow not only to the gamers, but to the industry at large.

We know the AO rating carries with it some excessive weight. Weight which many retail chains will refuse to touch while allowing uncut versions of current musical acts, books, and even slasher movies to be released unchecked. And we see this as an inequality. The problem is, as the AO rating gets attached to games, no companies are willing to stand up against the perceived concept that a single year brings with it an understanding that somehow the average consumer did not possess before. The Adults Only rating carries with it a stigma of pornography which oushes many retail chains away. But we are tired of the double standard. We are tired of seeing games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or The Punisher modified to obtain that M rating that seems all important to the retail chains.

We are not irrational children. We are adults and as such, we should be allowed to choose our media. Be this through the purchasing of a copy of Saw Uncut on DVD, the latest Marilyn Manson CD, a copy of American Psycho on Paperback, or even an uncut copy of Manhunt 2 for the PSP, PS2, or Wii. As an industry, we stand precariously upon a ledge. If we allow the banning or modifying of this game to remain unchecked, then we've cast the integrity of the game industry at large into the abyss. This same abyss that people in the past have stood strong against, refusing to cast A Clockwork Orange, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, or even Canterbury Tales to the darkness.

As consumers of violent video games, we understand the reactionary view those who are not part of our hobby will take. We also understand we are being unfairly burdened with the additional responsibility for parents who refuse to take an active role in the raising of their child, relying instead upon unchecked and unmonitored media. We cannot change this. For every group which insist the violence in the media is shaping a new generation of killers, we can only point at the evidence of fewer and fewer violent crimes within the gaming communities. This evidence will continue to go unheard and unheralded throughout a fear mongering society bent on telling us how much worse things are getting. We cannot change this, either.

But money is what motivates a retail chain to action and to reason. And so we propose this. If you must go back and rework Manhunt 2 in order to obtain that all important M rating, or even a rating in general, allow a second version, an uncut version. Give us, as adult consumers, a choice. Help us draw this line in the sand against game censorship. Give us channels obtain these uncut versions. And track every copy sold. If you put your faith in your consumer fanbase, we will reward you in kind. You can show these sales numbers, obtained through nontraditional channels, to the retail chains and help us right the inequality video games are held by. Sony Computer Entertainment and Nintendo should also support this effort, allowing two seperate SKUs on this product. If you are wary, make a limited run of the AO rated version. Allow us a chance to prove our support. If the uncut version cannot obtain a rating in the UK, simply sell it direct to the consumer and allow modified version to fill traditional channels.

So far, the petition has seen a decent number of signatures from across the continents. If you think that the petition is a valid one and you would like to join in, you can do so by following the URL below and signing up.

Manhunt 2 - Todd Greenwald: Take-Two burned by past of Bully and GTA?
Time : 22:00 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

The last we heard about Todd Greenwald being involved with Manhunt 2, he shared his take on what Take-Two Interactive might do regarding its ultra-violent title being banned, as well as disowned - this being that Take-Two tones the game down a bit to get an M rating instead of its current AO one. Now, he has more insight to offer, and this time it's about the beating the publishing company is getting.

The Nollenberger Capital Partners analyst says that considering Manhunt 2 is not that important a title for the company - with GTA IV being the frontrunner of its current lineup - Take-Two may be getting the unfair treatment by being judged because of its controversy-ridden past, with Bully and Grand Theft Auto as being the most notable of these controversies.

He puts it like such:

It does seem that Take-Two is being a little bit unfairly singled out ... because of their history of provocative games, they're being burned by their past.

It does seem that way, doesn't it? And with Take-Two's shares also taking a beating, what with the news of them suspending the game's distribution (as well as the game allegedly being banned in other countries, not just the UK), it does seem that the furors caused by Bully and Grand Theft Auto are coming back to haunt Take-Two. We do hope, however, that everything turns out all right for all the parties involved, without things getting none-too-violent.

Manhunt 2 - Rumor: Take-Two to appeal the ban?
Time : 20:45 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

The last time I heard about the hoopla surrounding Manhunt 2's ban, I reported that Take-Two has decided to suspend the game's distribution a bit, in order to buy themselves time and think just what sort of action they could take so that when the game is finally released, it's without any more hiccups or snags. Now, it seems that the publishing firm has finally made a decision, and that's to appeal the ban the British Board of Film Classification slapped onto the title.

While it's certainly bold of Take-Two to go to the mattresses for its own product, the alternatives look no less damning - them being a) cutting out content to make it warrant an M rating, or b) release the game as is, even with the ban and the AO title.

And with the publishing firm's defense being that the game itself is an entertainment experience tailored for psychological horror fans, and quite in line with other mainstream entertainment choices available to the public (such as movies and books), it could be a solid case as far as appealing the ban is concerned.

Please do note that Take-Two Interactive has yet to confirm whether they're actually appealing the BBFC's decision or not, but I'll be here to update you as soon as I catch wind of it.

Manhunt 2 - Take-Two suspends development and distribution
Time : 15:45 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

Take-Two Interactive Software has temporarily suspended their plans to distribute Manhunt 2 in the wake of the game's current pariah status among game retailers, console companies, and ratings groups.

According to Reuters, the company has "temporarily suspended" distribution plans for Manhunt 2 as it reviews its options following the game's banning in the UK and its subsequent "Adults Only" rating in America. In addition to the UK banning of the game, Sony and Nintendo follow a policy of not allowing playback of Adults Only titles on their platforms, essentially killing the game upon release in its current state.

Said Take-Two in a statement, "We continue to stand behind this extraordinary game. We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment."

Following this, Take-Two's options are limited to releasing the game in its current state for the PC, reworking the game to remove its AO rating, or dropping the game outright. Chances are though, they'll rework the game to move the rating into more profitable territory. While the hoopla behind the game's release may have brought public scrutiny on the game, gamers are definitely more aware of the game now, especially following the game's favorable review on NGamer. Hopefully, Rockstar Games will be able to keep the game's important nuances intact whilst making it more ratings-friendly.

Manhunt 2 - Jack Thompson comments , calls ESRB rating "delicious"
Time : 17:50 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

With all the hubbub about Manhunt 2 being banned, it's not surprising that it's caught the attention of the people, particularly a certain Mr. Jack Thompson. In an email that also spoke of Take-Two's troubles with its admittedly ultra-violent title, the lawyer states that the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) has given itself some much-needed credibility by slapping Manhunt 2 an Adults Only rating. He elaborates that by doing so, the ESRB has proven that its ratings actually mean something, and not just a fancy label.

Here's Mister Jack Thompson's email, verbatim:

This is all absolutely delicious. I warned Take-Two months ago that there would be huge problems if it went ahead with Manhunt 2. Who was right about that kiddies?

Secondly, the BBC and the world are now laughing at Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick for his idiotic statement yesterday that Manhunt 2 is "a fine piece of art." Find the BBC story on that! Right, and Jack the Ripper was his generation's Rembrandt. Please.

Take-Two has been hemorrhaging cash over the last few financial quarters, and this must makes it worse. I love it. If you all would stop and think about this for a minute, this development is a HUGE benefit to the video game industry.

It fits nicely with their argument that the ESRB ratings are real and actually mean something. Responsible people within the industry, even Doug Lowenstein, have been saying for quite sometime that Take-Two had become a problem for the entire industry because it was painting a bullseye on the back of the whole industry and making it more difficult for the industry to get US politicians off its back.

Now the ESRB does something that indicates is might be trustworthy, and you nitwits go bonkers because of that development. Grow up and smell the hot coffee. This is the best thing that could have happened to the industry. The isolation and ostracism of Take-Two by the industry was long overdue. Now that it has come, rejoice.

Certainly strong words coming from Mr. Jack Thompson, but they do carry water, specifically about the ESRB. The fact that the AO rating was enough to instigate such a reaction gives more credibility to the ratings system, which means parents will be able to trust the label on the games they're buying for their kids.

Manhunt 2 - Australia to ban Manhunt 2 too?
Time : 17:45 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

I'm really not certain how all of this is going to end, but it appears Take Two's Manhunt 2 is headed for more trouble. You already know the whole story behind the controversy, with the latest blow coming from Sony and Nintendo stating they won't allow any "AO" title on their systems.

Now it seems that Manhunt 2 will not be arriving in Australian shores as well. The Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) review board has yet to issue an official statement on the matter but insiders from Australia's Federal government believe that OFLC's decision will be similar to that of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

"We don't want to preempt the decision of the Office of Film and Literature Classification Review Board but it is looking very doubtful," commented a representative from the Attorney General's department. It should be remembered that the original Manhunt was released in the Land Down Under and sold 18,000 copies on Xbox and PlayStation 2 (PS2).

OFLC has been aggressive in recent times in "refusing to classify" controversial titles such as this. Among the various video game titles which weren't released in Australia include Grand Theft Auto III, the Postal franchise, and even Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.

As of this writing, the initial release date of Manhunt 2 both for Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Portable in North America still stands.

Manhunt 2 - Analysts go over Manhunt 2 Rating
Time : 13:10 BST | Posted by Matt Stanyon

They predicts tough times ahead for Take-Two

It's been quite the eventful week for Manhunt 2, isn't it? With its recent banning in the UK, being buffeted by parent watchdog groups, and having just been shunned by the two companies whose consoles it's coming out on - the title's not even released yet, and it's taking a colossal beating any other game would have shattered underneath. This begs the question: what's going to happen now?

Besides starting up a time machine to see what's going to happen come the game's promised July 10 release, we have the next best thing - a group of analysts' take on what sort of action Take-Two would probably do to be able to release Manhunt 2 without any more troubles.

But before that, let's go over Take-Two's options. The first is toning down the game a notch - which means cutting out or censoring content, to get it from being rated as Adults Only (AO) down to Mature (M). Second is appealing to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) to re-rate the game themselves, with the title presented as is. The third is simply taking it all in stride, and release Manhunt 2 into the public, unedited and complete with its AO rating.

Now that we're up to speed, what do the analysts think Take-Two would do? Enter the first analyst, Nollenberger Capital Partner's Todd Greenwald. He says that he expects Take-Two to pick the first choice - that is, to do whatever it takes to get an M rating instead of an AO. Citing the Hot Coffee incident with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as the basis for his assumption, he expects the publishing firm to do the same with Manhunt 2. He also says that the sales of an M-rated Manhunt 2 would probably make up for the UK ban, but an AO-rated one wouldn't.

Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian shares Todd Greenwald's sentiments, in that Take-Two would indeed make the choice of cutting stuff out in favor of an M rating. However, Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter believes otherwise, saying that Take-Two would most likely ship the game as it is, AO rating and all.

He cites two reasons for this. First, editing the content for an M rating would certainly mean Take-Two spending more money than they've already spent in developing this game, and also disappointing fans with a delayed (and watered-down) title. The other reason is that with Take-Two not doing so well in the financial aspect of things, and having already made some belt-tightening measures, investing more money in the game is a step backwards.

Well, whatever Take-Two's decision is going to be, the world's certainly waiting for it. More updates about Manhunt 2 as I get them.

How about the fans, though? What do you think will be Take-Two's final answer? Let me know by your comments.
